ABOUT OUR ADVENTURE
Discover Costa Rica - and yourself again! - as we see the very best this slice of paradise has to offer. Yes, you really should start packing your bags right now!
Costa Rica is a gorgeous country full of delightfully fresh food, friendly faces and diverse landscapes. The national saying is Pura Vida, which translates to “pure life” or “simple life.” This is a way of life, an attitude and emotion of happiness that embodies the people of Costa Rica.
On this adventure, you’ll experience your pura vida exploring two highlights of the country: the famous cloud forests in Monteverde and the coveted beaches of Sámara.
We’ll kick off our adventure in the lush jungles and dramatic rainforests of Monteverde.
Named “the jewel in the crown of cloud forest reserves” by National Geographic - the majestic town of Monteverde is a small community situated in the Cordillera de Tilarán mountain range.
Most known for being home to the famous Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve - a national park - the rainforest is the heart of this town. You’ll be able to see the mist rolling through the green canopy and be delighted by the symphony of sounds from the forest as you walk among one of the rarest habitats on Earth.
The town also offers tons of local flavor from food to locally made goods. You’ll stay active and immersed in adventure activities and tours amid the magical mountain views.
Surrounded by lush, green landscapes with majestic views - chances are - your heart will feel at home here. Whether you’re soaring over the canopy on a zipline or walking along the rainforest floor on one of the 13km (8 miles!) of well-kept hiking trails looking up at the tangle of vines above, you’ll be deeply happy you’ve made the journey to this sacred place.
If you love the outdoors and nature, this is one of the top spots in the world. Named #14 on "Place to Remember Before it Disappears” by Newsweek, you’ll be thrilled to have a chance to experience the thrill of seeing the diverse flowers, animals and views, along with the variety of exciting activities this town has to offer.
Monteverde is about 2 ½ hours from Liberia International Airport (LIR) by car, and group transportation will be provided. Most, if not all of the roads to our destination are paved. Monteverde (which means “green mountain”) is a mountain-filled wonderland so the ride up is full of ups, downs & curved roads. The views are fantastic!
To make our trip fun and memory-filled, we will stop so you can stretch your legs and - of course - take once in a lifetime pictures. Our driver knows the perfect places to snap at least a few photos!
Julie was a great host and knows how to facilitate meaningful discussion that really gets to the heart of each person's issues, even when we all are in different stages of life. A great mix of rest, adventure, and discussion.
After being invigorated and renewed by the pristine rainforests of memorable Monteverde, we’ll trade in mountain vibes for sun-kissed beach days as we head off to Sámara.
Known for its palm-lined main beach with light tan sand and picture-perfect scenery - Playa Sámara - you’ll be delighted by just how beautiful and tropical this fun in the sun haven is. Offering tons of local flavor from food to shopping, you’ll be immersed in beautiful Costa Rican culture with gorgeous views, relaxing activities, trendy boutique shops and unique art stores that inspire & enchant you. How wonderful!
If you like to swim & enjoy the ocean, this is the beach for you. Playa Sámara typically enjoys relatively calm water due to a coral reef just offshore. So make sure you pack your bathing suit, flip flops and snorkel gear...ahhh swimming in the refreshing ocean water!
When it’s time, it’s an easy two hour ride back to the Liberia International Airport (LIR).
Fun Under the Sun
We have a full list of activities to choose from - remember, you design your adventure so you choose which activities are right for you!
Here are a few of your adventure options:
Hike through mystical cloud forests on hanging bridges for spectacular mountain views
Creep through the rainforest and see a whole new side during the night hike
Become enthralled with the wildlife at the hummingbird & butterfly gardens, and witness an orchid that looks like bacon
End your days with breathtaking sunsets
For even MORE adventure…
Soar above the lush, famous rainforests on a zipline
Take a horseback ride through the picture-perfect mountain landscape or along the beach
Learn to surf along gorgeous sandy beaches of the Pacific
Kayak or stand-up paddleboard your way to learn to snorkel
Everything is arranged for you. All you need to do is to grab your passport and get to the airport.
The Luna Azul retreat gave me the opportunity to give up control, be present and to take a look at my routines at home.
Accommodations in Monteverde
In Monteverde, we’ll stay at Hotel Atardecer for four nights.
An intimate, family-run hotel, Hotel Atardecer (atardecer is Spanish for sunset) is one of the best places in town to catch jaw-dropping views of this region.
Meticulously maintained and attended to with love by Rosita and family, you’ll feel cozy, comfortable and at ease in this home away from home. Giant hibiscus flowers and lush plants grace the hotel’s several gathering spaces and - in the spirit of Costa Rica - each room is unique.
Rooms are decorated in local textiles and feature simple furniture, all the fresh linens you need, and either a single or multiple beds.
Given Covid-19, retreat attendees will be staying in rooms solo, unless they sign up for the retreat with friends or family they feel comfortable sharing a room and bathroom with. All other rooms have private baths.
We will have the entire top floor of the hotel to help with social distancing.
Each day, we’ll gather at 5pm to have happy hour & watch the sunset. Chances are, you’ll see the Gulf of Nicoya & the Nicoyan Peninsula in the distance. Ahhhh, so breathtaking.
And, if you want to stroll into town and take in more local sights, it’s only about a 7-minute walk.
And in Samara...
We’ll stay at Pension Playa Samara for three nights.
A lovely little spot just a two-minute walk from the beach, this funky & fun hotel is just what you need to amp up the fun!
A gathering place for residents and visitors alike, this wonderful little slice of heaven features simple and clean rooms (did we mention comfortable beds and air conditioning?) with all the basic, welcoming amenities.
Helpful and attentive staff, a relaxing open-air lounge area, on-sight hammocks and a pool with restroom facilities make this a memorable, easygoing place to land and chill out.
THE BEST NEWS?
We have the ENTIRE hotel all to ourselves. Privacy & extra protection against any lingering virus concerns. Yasssss!
Given that you’ll be spending most of your time outside soaking up the warm sun & exploring the vibrant beach town, we imagine you’ll only be in your room for showering up and sleeping (recent travelers noted how strong the water pressure is!) This hotel is just perfect for that.
Both single and double rooms are available.
Given Covid-19, retreat attendees will be staying in rooms solo unless they sign up for the retreat and travel with friends or family (in which case, expect to share a bathroom -- there are a few rooms that share bathrooms). All other rooms have private baths.
Even if you’re traveling solo, you might also notice a few potential roommates wandering around the hotel property (howler monkeys and iguanas!)
It is Costa Rica after all.
In Monteverde, we’ll experience a variety of flavors and places to really kick off time together off right.
Enjoy a hearty (and included!) breakfast everyday at Hotel Atardecer. Imagine waking up and enjoying homemade pancakes, eggs, breads, sausages, rice and beans, fresh Costa Rican coffee and just-made juices. That’s exactly what you will experience in Monteverde. Guests rave about just how good Rosita’s home cooking is. If you’re looking for a truly local and authentic “like mom makes” breakfast, this is it.
Lunch and dinner daily will be enjoyed either at the hotel or out and about in town. The cost of dinner is included. The cost of lunch is not. Here are some of our favorite restaurants to check out:
Tree House Restaurante
An incredible place to grab a drink (with our favorite being the Tree House Mojito - the mint is blended, not muddled. It’s soooo yummy!), there’s a giant ficus tree that lives in the middle of the restaurant. The restaurant is on the 2nd & 3rd floors and the stairs wrap around the tree. They often have live music. The food is fantastic!
The perfect place to go for a coffee, pastry, lunch, snack, drink, hangout… This is a favorite place of the locals & has a great view.
A wonderful place to watch the sunset, eat a meal and enjoy happy hour, this is a hot spot in town which features organic, farm-to-table dining (the hotel has its own garden) as well as a microbrewery (beer, anyone?)
Featuring really good burritos, margaritas & a nice selection of local Costa Rican beers on tap (are you hungry yet?)
In Samara, we will enjoy a delicious, deluxe breakfast at the hotel each morning to start the day off right.
Featuring Costa Rican style beans & rice called gallo pinto, farm fresh eggs, fluffy just-prepared pancakes and the sweetest local fruit, you’ll be satisfied and nourished from the inside out.
Lunch will be enjoyed daily on your own at any one of the incredible restaurants in town. Featuring cuisine from all over the world - from Italian dishes to fresh salads to Middle Eastern staples - whatever you’re craving, you’ll be sure to find it just a short distance from our hotel. Our personal favorite - the Natural Center - is right off the beach and has many delicious options to choose from, including fresh organic juices & vegan ice cream (yum!)
In case you desire a snack in between lunch and dinner, no worries - we have you covered. Light snacks will be available at the hotel each afternoon for your convenience.
Dinner is included each night during your stay (ahhh how wonderful!) The location for dinners will vary, as we will mix it up with restaurants in the area. By the end of our time together, you'll have experienced an array of tastes, flavors & cuisines.
Variety really is the spice of life!
And speaking of spicy, the food in Costa Rica tends to be very flavorful, but also very mild when it comes to spiciness. Hot sauce and the flavorful Costa Rican sauce Salsa Lizano are typically available on every table. To balance it all out, fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables are plentiful and oh so tasty.
And of course, if you have ANY dietary restrictions, we got you. Just let us know, and we’ll make sure your needs are taken care of (no worries, anywhere!)
By the time the trip was over, I came back not only rejuvenated, but having a different perspective on my life, motivation, and direction I wanted my life to go. If the retreat taught me anything, it’s that understanding you, who you want to be, and where you want to go in life is freedom. It’s an experience I’ll never forget, and recommend it to anyone who not only feels lost, but also wants to improve themselves.
You'll leave Costa Rica with:
… A renewed sense of confidence & clarity about where you’re headed next - YES!
… A new set of tools you can use anytime you feel challenged or stressed - YES!
… A deep sense of rest & relaxation with a new set of self care strategies just in the nick of time - YES!
… A heart-fluttering excitement about who you are & what you offer the world - YES!
… A body-tingling sense of connection to new like-minded women just like you - YES!
… A limitless well of energy that’s irresistibly attractive & deeply satisfying - YES!
Traveling International Right Now
It’s been a crazy couple of years. We get it. Nerves are natural as we continue to pivot in these changing times. As of November 1, 2020, Costa Rica opened its borders to citizens from all 50 states and Washington, D.C. -- who can enter the country on flights departing from the United States.
Currently, visitors traveling to Costa Rica will need to provide proof of a medical insurance policy to cover any COVID-19 related medical treatment or quarantine lodging while in Costa Rica. We will continue to monitor the details and more information about this will be sent to you by Julie & Beth after you sign up for the retreat.
All visitors must also complete an online Health Pass (pasa de Salud) 72 hours prior to departure to Costa Rica. A link to the Health Pass will also be shared prior to travel.
In addition to the coronavirus-related measures, U.S. tourists must also have a valid passport and proof of intent to exit Costa Rica within 90 days.
Proof of a negative Covid-19 test is NOT required to enter Costa Rica. However, a negative test result IS required to return to the U.S., which will be coordinated for the group.
We will continue to monitor the situation in both countries very closely.
Your Safety is Our Top Priority
We expect this retreat to be a GO!
And, in the unlikely event that Costa Rica closes its borders to American travelers prior to our scheduled departure dates…
We got you!
We will have alternative travel dates in February 2023 (and your deposit and any funds paid will automatically be rolled over to the new dates). If you want to OPT OUT of the automatic rollover and receive a refund, you must let Julie and Beth know by email within 14 days of notification of the change in trip dates.
For the safety of all participants, and out of respect for all Costa Ricans, we are requiring all participants to be fully vaccinated by at least 30 days prior to departure.
We recommend that you travel with hand sanitizer, sanitizing wipes and masks (you will find all of those items readily available in Costa Rica, too, in case you need more when we’re there.) Of course, all airport & airline requirements should be followed, and we will follow any requirements and guidelines in Costa Rica.
In addition, we’ll have the entire floor in Monteverde and hotel in Samara to ourselves. And all group transportation will be private too. We’ve arranged this to give you the most amount of protection possible.
We ask that you use your common sense when dining out, shopping and going out and about. We will do everything we know to keep you safe, and we trust you will, too.

For your return flight, you will want to depart after 1:00pm on February 12, 2022.
(Please do not fly into Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO)).
